Hypnosis is a natural altered state of awareness. For example when we “daydream” we are going into hypnosis. For therapeutic purposes, we use an inner directed state. This is because when we become more focused upon our internal thoughts, processes and sensations, we are able to pay attention to what is really immediately important. That way we can access resources and memories that have long been forgotten and that are needed for the individual to find the outcome they desire.

We have a conscious mind, which is our current awareness and a subconscious mind (or the unconscious) which is everything else. Our subconscious is every experience we have had; our memories, beliefs, attitudes, identities, our habitual behaviours as well as our autonomic functioning (breathing, heart beat etc). Hypnosis is the means to explore and tap into our subconscious.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

This is essentially a way of working that identifies and helps change specific unwanted responses or behaviours (e.g., a phobia, eating habits, smoking, panic attacks, blushing, confidence etc). It effectively focuses on the thoughts and feelings that drive the unwanted behaviour. The assumption here being that if our thoughts change then so will our behaviour.

Using hypnosis, suggestions are given that are taken in by the mind.

  • Replacing unhelpful thoughts
  • Finding existing inner resources that have been forgotten
  • Exciting the mind as to the possibilities of a new way of doing things.

Behavioural techniques are used to gain further knowledge about what is going on in the specific situation and to gain confidence in the new learning’s that are occurring. The treatment plan is usually brief and people experience relatively fast relief of symptoms and responses, and enduring changes are made.

Analytical Hypnotherapy and Inner Child Work

This way of working looks to go to the deeper roots of an issue or problem. It helps answer questions like “Why do I do this?” or “Why does this happen?” or “Why do I feel this way?”

It holds the view that within us we have a part that is being held back by the past, sometimes recognised as “childlike” behaviours in our present lives (anger outbursts, tantrums, complete withdrawal, feelings that we just can’t explain etc). Understanding needs to be gained for resolution in the present. By using a set of techniques and a process, freedom can be gained from the past, eradicating the present day problem. People often find they have greater clarity and see their potential and direction in life.

NLP – Neuro Linguistic Programming

NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming is a set of therapeutic techniques that we can use to change responses. It is essentially the re-programming of the mind and choosing a more positive outlook. It springs from the study of the world’s most effective therapists.

The field of NLP has gone past these initial accomplishments to study the patterns, behaviours and beliefs of successful people in all areas of life. What NLP has found is that people that succeed all use the same kind of techniques to communicate with themselves and others. They have the same “mental tool set” that we all have; they just use them in different ways. NLP shows us how we understand our experiences. It is a way of perceiving reality, and of making appropriate interventions that move us towards what we want. “NLP may be the most powerful vehicle for change in existence.” – Modern Psychology Magazine.

Counselling and Psychotherapy

Counselling and Psychotherapy allow clients to explore personal and emotional difficulties in a structured environment. A Psychotherapist is trained to listen and assist the client in gaining a greater understanding of the process by which they can become trapped in their own issues.

A session provides a space to explore experiences and emotions and get in touch with feelings and issues of conflict, through which the client can become acquainted with inner resources for personal growth and healing.

Most people go through times in their lives that are painful and distressing, when they face difficulties and decisions. Sometimes memories of the past, painful issues in the present or anxiety about the future can make it difficult to cope with everyday life.

Counselling and Psychotherapy takes account of the cultural and socio-political context in which the client lives and how these factors affect the presenting problem. This includes an awareness and assessment of cultural influences such as age, development, disability, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, indigenous identity, nationality and gender.

Coaching

Coaching is an interactive process that helps individuals and organisations to develop more rapidly and produce more satisfying results. Coaches work with clients in all areas including business, career, finances, health and relationships. As a result of coaching, clients set better goals, take more action, make better decisions, and more fully use their natural strengths. Professional coaches are trained to listen and observe, to customise their approach to the individual client’s needs, and to elicit solutions and strategies from the client. They believe that the client is naturally creative and resourceful and that the coach’s job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has.

While the coach provides feedback and an objective perspective, the client is responsible for taking the steps to produce the results he or she desires. People hire a coach when they are starting a new business, making a career transition, revaluating their life choices, or simply feeling ready for a personal or professional breakthrough.
